Nov 24

While buying car insurance coverage, we often believe we know it all, but still there are many points which continue to remain unclear. You may not know whether you have comprehensive or collision cover or both. Other terms you should be familiar about are underinsured motorists insurance, uninsured motorists and personal injury protection.

If you don’t know about most of these terms, you belong to the majority. Most of American drivers don’t know about these terms either. It’s time you made an effort to understand these terms, because you have to buy automobile insurance cover for your car.

In most of the states, drivers are required to buy insurance for the damage they may cause to other drivers and their properties. If you cause damages to yourself, you are not bound to insure yourself, though it’s advisable that you do so.

Under comprehensive insurance coverage, most of the non traffic damages to the vehicle are insured. If your car gets involved in an accident with road side signage or with other cars, those damages are not covered under comprehensive coverage. If the accident involves your car and an animal, it would come under comprehensive coverage. In a nutshell, comprehensive coverage covers those damages that cannot be controlled by you. If you suffer damages to your car due to theft, it is covered under comprehensive insurance, but the items stolen from within the car is not covered in the same. Those items may, however, recovered by your home insurance.

If your car suffers damage due to collision with any object including other cars or due to flipping over, it is covered under collision coverage. The cost of collision insurance coverage is almost double to that of the comprehensive coverage. Numerous drivers choose not to buy collision insurance coverage. If the vehicle is bought under a financial loan from a bank, you are legally required to buy collision insurance coverage to protect the interest of your lender.
